Off South Dakota Hwy 79, lies an unexpected treasure amongst the historic and unique venues of the southern Black Hills.  A bit off the beaten path, lies not your usual attraction. Windcross Conservancy houses not your usual horses, but the endangered Spanish Mustangs of North America.

Step back in time.  Experience the prairie and creek-sides of old Native American camps, the thrill of the herd thundering towards you, manes streaming in the wind.

Take a tour in time, where you can reach out and touch history.

Tours 


  • Open Daily May 1- Sept 15th Tours  begin 8:30 a.m. last tour leaves at 4 p.m. 
  • Call for availability after September 15th.  Office: 605-833-2336
  • Tours are limited in the number of people, which  allows you as the guest to truly experience the preserve horses. Reservations suggested.  Tours are by first reserved and arrived and last 45 minutes on average.
  • Donations are gratefully accepted and all funds from the tours go directly to the support of the horses.
  • Buses are welcome. Reservations required.
  • Large Groups are welcome.  Reservations required.
  • Family and Children friendly

 SOMETHING SPECIAL

Don't know what to give a teacher, the neighbor, the secretary.  The person that has everything.  Sponsor a horse in their name and give the gift that keeps on giving.

2013 Benefit Limited Edition Print

Artist Maria D'Angelo has graciously offered to donate $25 of every print sold of her Spanish Mustang limited edition print.  An outstanding opportunity to own a lovely work of art and support the Spanish Mustang horse.      

The horse featured in the print is Syndicated Copper, herd sire at the preserve in Buffalo Gap, SD.  Seen on the cover of the Advocate magazine.

A Summers Evening:  Raffle Quilt

Our annual fundraiser quilt.  It was generously donated by Leila Davis to raise funds for hay this year.  Tickets are a $1 each or 6 tickets for $5 and can be purchased by messaging us Facebook or on the Windcross site.

This quilt is a bit better than queen sized and is stunning in person.
